Life can indeed be very ironical at times owing to the fact that sometimes we do take certain decisions aware of the grave consequences yet we continue such actions, maybe because we feel the repercussions of our decision are slow to manifesting. For instance for those who take cigarette in most countries, it is usually boldly written in the cigarette pack that, ''smokers are liable to die young''. Regardless this caution and admonition most smokers still continue to smoke damning the consequence some of them even make a joke with it and laugh over it.
Well, the truth is that we are the product of our decisions. In fact the decisions we make at the early stages of our lives are prime and most important as they form our being. Carbonated items contain carbon dioxide gas under pressure, especially pertaining to beverage as natural mineral water or man-made drinks. A typical example is the soda drink which includes Coke, Pepsi, Fanta, and drinks of that sort.
Sincerely, soda drinks can be very refreshing, sweet and could be very addictive for example coke because of its caffeine properties but, that is an issue for another day. According to the 2005 USDA report ''Contribution of nonalcoholic Beverages to the U.S Diet'' on average, America consumes more than 50 gallons of carbonated soft drinks each year. Although the ingredients in carbonated drinks are deemed safe by Food and Drink Administration, these beverages may cause serious side effects especially when consumed regularly or in great quantity.
People also consume soda in large quantity because let's think about it,
(1) It can be very refreshing
(2) It is not so expensive
(3) Some contain caffeine which could make it addictive
(4) It could be a veritable option for quenching thirst
(5) It is easy to find due to good advertisement, promotions and marketing.
But among all these reason why people take soda, they are even more reasons why soda or carbonated drinks should be avoided. They include:
(1)Risk of Overweight: This is so because soda contains lots of calories which increases risk of obesity. In April 2007 Lenny Vartanian Phd published an article stipulating that sugar sweetened drinks are associated with obesity and this can lead to diabetes, heart disease and obsteoarthritis.
(2) Weakened Bones: This is because it contains Phosphoric Acid which could weaken bones and can rot teeth
(3)It has no Nutritional Value: They are no beneficial components in soft drinks
(4)Diabetes: This is a consequence of overweight. Anything that promotes weight gain increases the risk of diabetes. Drinking soda not only contributes to making people fat, but it also stresses the body's ability to process.
(5) Impairs Brain Functions: It can cause impaired brain functions, hyperactive behavior, difficulty focusing and lack of impulse control.
(6)Increased Blood Pressure: Experts have reasons to believe that overconsumption of fructose particularly in the form of soft drinks, leads to an increase in blood pressure.
(7)Dehydration: This is another problem caused by soda because soda acts as dehydrating diuretics; both caffeine and sugar cause dehydration.
(8) Harmful Effects on liver: There is evidence that consumption of two much soft drink put you under increased risk for liver cirrhosis similar to what chronic alcoholics have.
In conclusion, it now appears that for example taking a bottle of coke will be disastrous to your health but that is not what this essay is saying. What this essay is trying to bring to the fore is that, one should be careful in the consumption of carbonated drinks. Remember ‘too much of everything is not good’ if soda should be taken at all it should be consumed rarely. Instead of consuming carbonated drinks, tea, natural juices, even locally made ‘ZOBO’ without sugar constitute a healthier alternative. Stay SAFE!
